Have you noticed that almost all cars are either black, white or grey?
That's pretty much it.
Check out this graph, the line at the bottom is the world average, and you see that 3 quarters are either black, white or grey.
Before doing some research for this video, I had the preconceived idea that the color of the car affected the insurance cost… I thought that if you had a red car you would pay more insurance, because statistically people with red cars drive faster and probably crash more :)
But it turns out, it's not true…
In terms of colors, the insurance cost only goes up if the paint of the car is expensive, because it increases the value of the car.
So if the insurance is not what leads to more dull colors, what is it?
Who is deciding that we should buy a boring looking car?
I remember hearing Seth Godin - a brillant marketer - talk about a brand committee deciding the home appliances colors for the next year, to make sure your dishwasher would "fit" into the landscape of the supermarket.
So there is probably a similar committee with old white dudes deciding what would be the next "appropriate" car colors, year after year.
And I'll tell you what: They're either really depressed, or they want us to be depressed.
Because what I see is an intention to homogenize everyone, to make sure we fit in, don't stand out too much, and keep our personality and creativity low.
